Holst Birthplace Trust

Who we are

The Holst Museum occupies the house in which the composer Gustav Holst was born. He is internationally known for The Planets, a seven-movement orchestral suite.

Holst Victorian House is a wonderful period house in its own right. As a composer birthplace museum it is almost unique in Britain - the only other is the birthplace of Sir Edward Elgar in Worcestershire.

Visitors to the museum will learn more of Holst’s life, his music, his family and friendships.  They will see a piano that he owned and on which he composed The Planets.

There are also 8 period rooms (drawing room, bedrooms, scullery, kitchen with cast iron range, larder and sitting room) to explore whilst discovering stories of the residents who lived in the house between the 1840s and 1890s.  The drawing room features paintings by Theodor von Holst, Gustav Holst’s great uncle, himself an important influence on the Pre-Raphaelite movement.
